About Me: Well hello there! I am Mars and these humans here at hart figure that I am about 1 ½ years old. When I came into hart's care, I was in bad shape with lots of quills stuck in me. But don't fret! While I have had a few quills migrate out after the first ones were removed, I haven't had any since. I was also quite thin when I was found but I am growing into a healthy medium size doggo now! They are not sure of my breed but I am told there is some German Shepherd in me. Hmmm…a few fun facts about me? Well I get along well with other types and sizes of dogs including the one that lives with me in my foster home! I haven't had any experience yet with cats but my foster parents are planning to give me a chance to meet them. I love to follow my humans around the house and I feel the need to pick up things they leave around.  I have no interest in chewing these items, but I do like to take them to my bed and sleep beside them until someone comes to retrieve whatever I picked up. I am a low energy guy and I really like it when a human just wants to relax and chill out with me. Do you think that if I lie on my back with my legs in the air someone will give me a belly rub? I think I will try that! I will give you extra smooches if you give me treats too. While I might take a little time to warm up to strangers, I do adapt to any situation quickly. My foster parents think I would get along well with kids even though it might take me a while to get used to them. And walks? Oh boy do I look forward to those! They can be so interesting especially when I hear dogs barking in the distance. Maybe it's a new friend for me to meet? You know who else I would love to meet? YOU!

Health Notes: Mars came to us as a partnership with another rescue group transporting him and hart providing care. His transport was urgent as he had been quilled quite badly. His first stop was to an emergency vet where he was sedated and had quills removed. During his neuter, more quills were removed. And then he required another surgery for an abscess caused by more quills. During all of this, Mars has been gaining weight and getting healthier. Adoptive parents for Mars need to be aware that quills can continue to migrate and erupt for up to a year. Mars is up to date with DACPP, Bordatella, Rabies and is neutered and microchipped.

Behavior Notes: Mars is a pretty low energy dog. He does have some anxiety with the crate, and has been destructive in the crate but it's a work in progress and getting better. He has been left loose in the house and hasn't been destructive. He is good with other dogs. He has not been exposed to cats, or children, but foster mom feels he would be good with kids. He takes a little bit to warm up to strangers and new situations, but adapts pretty quickly, as he is a shy guy. He loves to follow his humans around. He also likes to pick up his humans things, and take them to his bed and sleep with them. He has not been destructive at all. Mars likes to sleep on his back with his legs up in the air, hoping for a belly rub. He prefers women to men, and warms up to women faster then men. He is a little bit of a puller on the leash and currently will only walk on leash with his foster mom, he currently refuses to walk with his foster dad. He is very alert on his walks and will stop to listen when a dog is barking in the distance and needs to be coaxed to continue walking.

Think you have found your furever friend?
