Overpopulation At Work

When you look at this photo what do you see?

-          A cuddle fest?

-          Love in a fur coat with puppy breath?

-          More cuteness that you can handle?

In addition to all of this, I see overpopulation at work.

This is Laverne's litter.  Laverne's nickname is Fertile Mertyl  because she successfully delivered a litter of 13 puppies.  They have become our Lucky 13 Litter.  If you followed her intake you will remember that Laverne was brought in because she was visibly pregnant.  What we did not know is just how far along she was.

On the first leg of her journey from Hobbema to Leduc she delivered 4 pups in the back seat of our Field Volunteer's vehicle.  He is a very proud "Grand-paw".  She continued to deliver pups when she was transferred to another vehicle and continued still at the vet hospital.

One more day without food, shelter and care and the 13 pups would not have been so lucky.

Let's take a look at the numbers involved in overpopulation.

Now, think about the numbers resulting from the Lucky 13 litter.

13 dogs mating with another dog, each capable of contributing 67,000 dogs in a 6 year period.

From the Lucky 13 pups, that would add up to 871,000.

Now there is something to think about!
