John Aspden

How long have you been volunteering for hart?
Since August of 2013

What is your volunteer role within hart?
I'm a photographer. I started with events, such as adoption days but now i also do intake and vaccination parties, and adoption  photos of individual dogs. I also help with some smaller transport jobs.

What do you do when you are not volunteering?
I'm the technical lead with a local Internet Service Provider. In my other spare time, I'm a soccer referee, and I spend time in Whitemud Ravine with my three-legged dog Lucy. I always have my camera with me, and while there I do landscape and wildlife photography. I also do other volunteer photo work, most commonly with Help Portrait and the Neurosurgery Kids Fund at the Stollery.

If you were a rescue dog, what kind would you be?
I'd be a mid-sized dog with big brown sad eyes that can melt a human heart with a glance.

Why do you volunteer with hart?
I wanted to use my photography skills to do good, and I love dogs. In the last few months I've had more continuous contact with the hart dogs, and I love to see the progress that's obvious when you compare their intake photos to their adoption photos.

What experience in hart made you realize you were making a difference?
Some of the dogs that I've photographed have found their furever homes quickly, and I'd like to think that I captured some of their personality in my photos, and hope in doing so that I made at least a tiny contribution to their adoption.

What advice would you have for someone who is considering volunteering?
Once you attend a hart volunteer orientation, you'll see what a huge amount of work goes into this wonderful organization, so you'll see how much we need you. And what else are you going to do with your time - sit in front of the TV?
