How long have you been volunteering for hart?
I started volunteering in the fall of 2014!

What is your volunteer role within hart?
I started off helping with fundraising and planning/working events and I recently joined the behavioural team as well. On this team, I help with prescreening of potential adopters that are considering HART+ dogs along with any behavioural issues foster parents may be having with their foster dog!

What do you do when you are not volunteering?
Professionally, I graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce and now work as a human resources coordinator in the construction industry. When I am not working or volunteering, I love trying out new restaurants and exploring Edmonton with my family, friends and boyfriend. I also love travelling and have been all over Europe and volunteered in Africa teaching grade 4 and working at a lion rehabilitation camp.

If you were a rescue dog, what kind would you be?
I would be the type of dog that is always happy go lucky and wags their tail. I would love my owners and basically everyone I met and I would want to have as many dog friends as possible to hang out with!

Why do you volunteer with hart?
Since I was young, I have been in love with all types of animals. Dogs are my weakness and that fact that so many are abused or neglected honestly breaks my heart. I realize that I won't be able to completely solve this problem, but making a different in and around Edmonton is very important to me. It warms my heart to know that so many dogs are now in safe and loving homes thanks to organization like HART and I am so proud to be a part of it.

What experience in hart made you realize you were making a difference?
Working events and seeing former HART dogs with their forever parents is the most fulfilling experience in the world. To look at dogs that were once exposed to the most unfavorable living circumstance and see them wagging their tails and being full of life again is what makes all of the hours spent volunteering totally worth it.

What advice would you have for someone who is considering volunteering?
When I speak to people about volunteering, so many respond with how they would love to get involved. Take the initiative and get involved if it interests you! Every person brings a different skill to the table and you don't have to be super outgoing or great at selling to be a volunteer - there is a role for everyone! It's because of the volunteers that these beautiful dogs now have loving homes so don't be afraid - even just helping at one event makes a huge difference.
