Patti Hammond

How long have you been volunteering with hart?
I've been volunteering for about 15 months.

What is your volunteer role within hart?
My primary role is Foster Vetting but I also love to volunteer for fundraising events such as the dog wash.

What do you do when you are not volunteering?
When I am not volunteering I am running the home and lives of 3 kids ages 10, 13, and 15.

If you were a rescue dog, what kind would you be?
If I were a rescue dog, I would look to my foster family as my saviours. I would look at them with grateful eyes and a full heart of joy for now I am safe, secure and loved.

Why do you volunteer with hart?
I volunteer with hart because I admire that hart is an organization determined to improve the lives of rural and reserve dogs that are in situations where they tend to be forgotten and ignored. These animals are in distress and it moves me that hart is there to rescue.

What experience in hart made you realize you were making a difference?
A stray at the airport got me involved with hart. hart was the organization that came up on a google search when I was looking for someone to rescue this dog. I was deeply moved that hart worked so hard to rescue her and didn't give up on her despite Jetta's escaping ways. I knew I had to show my gratitude by getting involved. When Jetta escaped her foster home after 6 months, I was sure she made a run to return to the freedom of a stray, the only life she knew. I knew hart, and my efforts with hart, were making a difference when Jetta chose to return to her foster home on her own. She had a choice and she chose hart.

What advice would you give someone who is considering volunteering?
Loving animals fills your heart with joy but volunteering to help those who are suffering will nurture and feed your soul.
