Richard Innes

How long have you been volunteering with hart?
I started with hart in the spring of 2006. So six years plus.

What is your volunteer role within hart?
I'm a Director and the Treasurer. I maintain the accounting records, generate financial statements and required government filings to maintain our status as a registered charity. I also provide tax receipts for donations and assist in grant applications.

What do you do when you are not volunteering?
I've been a Chartered Accountant for 40 years and am now semi-retired. Aside from walking our two dogs Echo and Jojo, I provide consulting services to the Alberta Government and a few clients in private businesses.

If you were a rescue dog, what kind would you be?
Just like our rescue dog Jojo, a beautiful, calm Sheppard collie cross.

Why do you volunteer with hart?
Because of my love for dogs and my ability to provide the administrative requirements. This allows other volunteers to concentrate on working directly with needy animals.

What experience in hart made you realize you were making a difference?
When I joined we had to reregister as a society and were economically challenged, personally subsidized by hart members. By getting reregistered, the administration caught up, and a hart credit card in place, the foundation was built for volunteers to concentrate on fundraising and organizational promotion. We are now in good position to be able to help with broader initiatives like Spay and Neuter clinics.

What advice would you give someone who is considering volunteering?
Basically, know yourself. Determine what the best fit is for you. And don't over commit so you can't follow through. You may want to foster a dog and show them the love and affection they have missed so far in their lives. You may not be able to take a dog but love meeting people and can help at fundraising events. You may be a strong coordinator and can help by working with foster families, volunteer coordination, or arranging events.

Volunteering with hart and being able to provide a furever home for a dog like JoJo is a wonderful, emotionally satisfying life experience. I encourage you to join us.
