How long have you been volunteering with hart?
I started in august 2014

What is your volunteer role within hart?
I am an artist for Hart. Most of my volunteer hours are spent at home painting a variety of canvases that will become Hart art. When I'm not painting at home, I'm painting with the hart dogs to create hart art masterpieces.

What do you do when you are not volunteering?
I work at canada post as a postal clerk, and I've got a lot of hobbies to keep me busy. I like wood working, gardening, sewing and of course painting. I like spending time with my family and friends and my 2 wonderful dogs.

If you were a rescue dog, what kind would you be?
I would probably be a Shepard mix from a rural area. Free spirited and cautious, I would be elusive and hard to catch. Weary of people, I could only be caught with a humane trap. But with lots of love and care I would grow into a loyal, devoted family member who would  also want to be petted all the time.

Why do you volunteer with hart?
I love dogs, and there are so many stray, unwanted, abused and neglected dogs, and it breaks my heart to know they suffer. I wanted to make a difference, and thought of volunteering, but was unsure what I could do or offer. Creating Hart art makes use of my artistic talent while helping dogs in need. It's possibly the best way for me to make a difference with the skills I have. In fact, I feel blessed that I can help Hart simply by doing what I love. I'm very thankful for all that Hart does and I'm thrilled to be a part of it!

What experience in hart made you realize you were making a difference?
My first painting pawty. That's when I got to meet some Hart dogs, and see the wonderful improvements they made in Harts care. I knew that Hart would be selling the finished canvases to raise funds, and that it is a difficult, ongoing effort to do so. Every dollar counted, and being at the pawty motivated me into becoming a volunteer they could continually count on!

What advice would you give someone who is considering volunteering?
Think about your strengths and what role might be best suited for you. There are a variety of tasks to complete on a daily basis, and different levels of commitment. It truly is a rewarding experience! Hart has helped so many dogs have the life they deserve, and only with the help of dedicated volunteers can they continue.
